Abstract

A steam cracked petroleum fraction containing C5 mono-olefins, diolefins, paraffins, naphthas and aromatics is heated with from 5-15 per cent of the total feed of methylcyclopentadiene, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and the resin so formed separated. The hydrocarbon mixture may be obtained by dimerizing a cracked C5 fraction boiling from 10 DEG to 50 DEG C., distilling off the dimers and using the overheads of the distillation, having an approximate composition:-isoprene 15 per cent, piperylene 15 per cent, other acyclic diolefins 4-5 per cent, normal C5 olefins 20-30 per cent, tertiary olefins 30 per cent and paraffins 5 per cent. The methylcyclopentadiene may be added from an extraneous source or the original feed may be so treated as to contain the desired amount, in which case the mixture may be obtained by thermally soaking C5 to C7 cracked fractions so that dimerization occurs, and recovering and cracking the dimers. Specified catalysts are boron trifluoride and aluminium halides, and the preferred polymerization temperature from -30 DEG to 94 DEG C. The polymeric materials may be mixed with an inert solvent before polymerization.
