Abstract
<PICT:0779088/III/1> In an evaporator comprising a shell having internal heating coils, such as is used for producing distilled water from sea or estuarine water, an overflow weir for withdrawing brine from the evaporator is arranged in an opening in the side wall of the evaporator at a level such that the sill of the weir is flush with the highest point of the heating coils. The brine flows over the weir into a collecting chamber; and the opening in the side of the evaporator is sufficiently large to ensure that there is free communication between the vapour space of the chamber and that of the evaporator. The device may be incorporated in each evaporator of a multipleeffect apparatus as shown. Raw water is introduced through inlet 11a into the shell of first evaporator 1a; and heating steam is supplied to coils 4a through pipe 5a. Brine leaves evaporator 1a by flowing over weir-plate 13a which is fitted to opening 14a in the shell of the evaporator. The brine enters chamber 15a, and then flows to evaporator 1b via pipe 16a and orificeplate 25a. Evaporators 1b and 1c are similar to the first evaporator. The brine from evaporator 1c overflows into chamber 15c, and is discharged to waste via pump 17a. Diluting water to assist the brine pump to operate satisfactorily with a small suction head is drawn in through pipe 19a. Vapour formed in evaporator 1c leaves through pipe 23c and is condensed to give the distilled water product. Orificeplates 25a and 25b may be arranged to be rather smaller than is necessary for maximum output, and part of the flow then passes through by-pass lines 26a and 26b. Valves 27a and 27b are adjusted so that there is a free brine level in chamber 15a and in chamber 15b.
