Abstract

<PICT:0587122/III/1> The rate of evaporation in a multiple effect evaporator is automatically adjusted by means responsive to variations in the density of the liquor in or leaving the evaporator, to effect the gradual cutting out or bringing into operation of one or more effects of the evaporator. Feed liquor is admitted through pipe 2 into the first effect 1 of a quadruple effect evaporator which is supplied with steam through pipe 8 controlled by valve 9. Concentrated liquor is withdrawn from the fourth effect 40 through pipe 5 and passes through a hydrometer 7, or other device responsive to variations in the density of the liquor, to a seal 41 and outlet 42. The hydrometer 7 is connected through linkage 60 to valve 51 in the passage 52, and effects a gradual cutting out or bringing into operation of the fourth effect. Vapours may be bled away at 44, 46, 47 for associated processes and, in this case, it is desirable to keep the passage 52 completely closed, if possible. The by-pass connection 58 with valve 50, controlled by thermostate 59, is incorporated so that the temperatures and pressures of the vapours bled away may be maintained at constant values. Further control is governed by valve 56 controlled by thermostat 57 and also by hydrometer 7 through linkage 61. Specification 587,121 is referred to.
