Abstract
<PICT:0778665/III/1> A paint roller comprises a shaft 1 having a circular head 5 rotatably mounted on a free end of the shaft, a circular head 8 journalled on the shaft adjacent a gooseneck portion 4 thereof leading to a handle, and resilient members, e.g. chucks 10, rotatably mounted on the shaft 1 or provided on the opposed sides of the heads 5, 8 and having parts, e.g. interconnecting strips 13, engaging a stiff sleeve 11 having an outer paint-retaining pile covering 12, e.g. felot or lamb's wool. The sleeve 11 and covering 12 are permanently interconnected, and are slidable as a unit over the heads 5, 8, which close the ends of the roller, and over the strips 13. The heads 5, 8 are secured to the shaft 1 by collars 9, and the chucks 10 are fixed, e.g. by welding, to the centres of the heads 5, 8. In one modification, the strips 13 are dispensed with, and jaws or chucks engage the sleeve 11. In another modification, each resilient member comprises two cups rotatably arranged back to back on the shaft 1 and spaced from the heads, peripheral parts engaging the sleeve 11. Again, the cups may be dispensed with and each pair replaced by a rubber disc or by a coiled spring having at least one loop.
