Abstract
778,223. Valves. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd., GREENWAY, E. A., and WHITEHEART, J. J. June 27, 1955 [July 21, 1954], No. 21331/54. Class 135. A gas valve for use in a flue between a gas producer and a consuming unit, e.g. a furnace, consists of a hood 4 movable vertically in a vertical portion 1 of the flue and having a cutaway portion on one side 6 which coacts with a horizontal section 2 of the flue. Alternatively, the hood may be formed to lift out of the water seal at all four edges and to control more than one horizontal passage. The vertical part 1 of the flue, which may serve as either the inlet or the outlet, has a deep, narrow trough 7 filled with water into which the lower part of the hood extends to form a seal. Water is continuously supplied to the trough through a connection 15 and escapes through an overflow 17 provided with a further water seal 19. The top of the hood has angle-iron stiffeners 9 by which it is connected to an actuating stem 8 passing through a water seal 10 having water supply and overflow pipes 16, 18. A tube 13, which dips into the water seal, is calibrated to indicate the degree of opening of the valve. The side 6 of the hood may have a notch to provide a small definite opening of the valve just short of total closure. Instead of providing a rectangular opening the cut-away portion of the hood may be in the form of an inverted Vee which may have a parallel portion at its top instead of a sharp apex. A balance weight may be fitted to the hood to compensate for the removal of metal on the side 6. The hood may be duplicated by a vertical dividing wall where two contiguous vertical flues are concerned. Alternatively, two hoods may be arranged back to back in a vertical flue to be independently movable. The casing of the valve is lined with refractory material.
