Abstract

777,597. Cables; cable joints. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S (SUBMARINE CABLES), Ltd. Oct. 12, 1955 [Oct. 13, 1954], No. 29511/54. Classes 36 and 38 (1). [Also in Group XXVIII] In order to prevent damage to a submarine cable when it is being lifted, the cable is threaded through two or more nested lengths of tubing of unequal lengths forming a flexible; sleeve at, or in the neighbourhood of, the lifting-point, for example at a joint or accessory. In Figs. 1-3, the cable 1 is threaded through a sleeve in the form of inner and outer flexible steel tubings 2, 3, each of interlocking helical turns of profiled metal strip, attached to a rectangular extension 6 of a joint or accessory casing 4 by soldering or welding to a sleeve 7. The latter is welded to channel members 8, 9 carried by channel members 10, 11 welded to the extension 6. A bell 12 having a circular inner surface and an outer surface which is square at the larger end and merges into circular at the inner end, is attached by lugs 13, 14 to members 10, 11. The tubes 2, 3 may have their flexibility graded by wires 16, 17 secured in the helical grooves, Fig. 3, by welding, and the grading may be made more gradual by using wires of smoothly-varying, or stepped, cross-section. The other end of the casing 4 may have a similar arrangement. Where a lift is to be applied remote from the casing 4, the outer tube 26 is positioned centrally on the inner tube 27, but this arrangement may be modified by extending the inner tube 27 so as to form also the inner tube of the sleeve 27, 29 of the adjacent casing 28. A two-part rigid tubular member 25 to take lifting tackle is placed over tube 26, its bore being bell-mouthed at each end.
