Abstract

974,006. Cables. BRITISH FEDERAL WELDER & MACHINE CO. Ltd., BIRLECEFCO (MELTING) Ltd., and T. F. TRIBE. Aug. 28, 1962 [Sept. 1, 1961], No. 31473/61. Heading H1A. A cable has a flexible conduit carrying water interwound with the cable conductors to form a bundle which is housed in a watertight flexible sheath. In the embodiment the end of the cable core 9 is connected by soldering or swaging to a sleeve 10 of a power-supplying ends fitting 5 with a diaphragm wall 12, separating the core end from a water supply chamber 13, provided with holes 14 and 15 each fitted with a metal tube 16 and 17 which extend the length of the sleeve 10. The tubes 16 of the inner holes 14 each house an end of a close-coiled spring-like conduit 18 which extends throughout the length of the core and being perforate allow water to pass through the core bundle. The bundle is spaced from the sheath and the water path therebetween is maintained by provision of a neoprene cord 25 oppositely wound around the core bundle. The sheath 19 may be of soft rubber 20 covered with woven fabric 21 and faced with a woven asbestos braid 22. A series of spaced rings and longitudinal ribs may be provided as at 28, to protect the water-cooled cable against impact.
