777,504. Stuffing-box packing. ZAGORSKI, J. Feb. 14, 1955 [Feb. 15, 1954], No. 4359/55. Stuffing-box packing comprises fabric tubing filled with a pulverent sealing mass free of binding agents. The tubing has substantially longitudinally and transversely extending weaving threads, is seamlessly woven or provided with a longitudinal seam, made of vegetable yarn, e.g. cotton, or synthetic yarn or mineral fibres, e.g. asbestos or glass and may be impregnated with a liquid, e.g. petrol containing grease and graphite or grease and talc. The sealing mass may be a mixture of graphite or talc and fibres, e.g. asbestos, cotton or synthetic fibres which may be impregnated with a small amount of diluted fatty liquid, e.g. one portion of tallow or stearin and ten or more portions of petrol and then dried and, if desired, soot or other pulverent material may be added. Apparatus for filling the sealing mass into the tubing comprises a storage cup 2 for the mass 3, a filling funnel 16 and a metal tube 4 all mounted by means of a conical nut 5 on a member 6 from which is suspended by means of wire rods 11 a nozzle 10 housing a rubber ring 12 that surrounds the lower end of the tube 4. The fabric tubing 8, closed at its bottom end, is pulled upwardly over the tube 4 and held lightly against the lower end thereof by the ring 12. An amount of the mass 3 is fed into the funnel 16 and forms a plug 7 that is pressed down manually by a plunger, Fig. 2 (not shown), the tubing 8 moving down an amount equal to the length of the plug 7 when the latter reaches the bottom of the tubing or the previous plug 7.
