Abstract
310,309. Crane Packing Co., (Assignees of Walton, J. N.). April 23, 1928, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Packing, non-metallic; metallic. - Packing comprises a mixture of finely divided lead or other soft metal with graphite, to which are added asbestos or other fibre or cork, and finally a binder such as liquid rubber composition or petroleum tailings. Suitable proportions comprise 10 parts of asbestos, 20 parts binder, 100 parts lead and 36 parts graphite. The volatile constituents may be evaporated by exposure or heat. The composition may be enclosed in a woven or braided wire or non-metallic sheathing, over which metal foil may be wound. Apparatus for filling the composition into the sheathing comprises a cylinder 17, the piston 16 of which is operated by an hydraulic press 10 with pump 11 and control valve 13. The composition is placed on a trough 24 and is carried into the cylinder by the piston and forced through the conical end 20 into a tube 21 secured to a nozzle 22. The sheathing 25 is gathered on the tube, 21 and is drawn off the tube by the entrance of the composition, the movement of the sheathing being retarded by spring-actuated rollers 28.
