Abstract
In a method of supplying to a metal bath one or more substances required for desulphurizing, deoxidizing, dephosphorizing, addition of silicon or carbon, or for alloying or like purposes, when the substances are difficult to add owing to low density, high volatility or reactivity, the substances are ground or otherwise formed to suitable size and shape and then formed into briquettes each of which has an aperture therethrough and has end surfaces enabling a tight fit of one briquette on an adjacent briquette. The briquettes are threaded on a rod or wire and pressed together, the unit so formed being immersed in the metal bath. The topmost briquette or briquettes are formed of refractory material also threaded on the rod or wire to afford protection of that part from the surface of the molten metal including any slag thereon. Preferably the particle size of the material is such that the briquettes have sufficient porosity to permit escape of gases formed on addition to the bath. Further the briquettes may be provided with a wrapping, e.g. of sheet metal or impregnated paper.
