A rubber-sheathed cable is provided with a protective covering consisting of one or more helically-applied ribbons of tough and impermeable synthetic resinous material such as nylon and an outer coating formed by a liquid which has a solvent action on the ribbon. Where there is more than one layer of ribbon adjacent layers may be applied with opposite lay, or the ribbons may be braided.
