An electric cable has a core of conducting plastics material extruded about a fibrous centre, such as a textile or paper thread, cord, or braiding, and is enclosed in an outer insulating sheath. The core material may be a thermoplastic, such as polyvinyl chloride or its co-polymers, containing a plasticizer and finelydivided carbonaceous material which acts as a conducting filler. The sheath is made, for example, of polyvinyl chloride, polythene, natural rubber, or of a synthetic rubber such as polychloroprene (neoprene), and may consist of two layers of which the thin inner layer is chosen for its electrical properties while the thicker outer layer is provided for protection against heat, abrasion, similar physical influences, and attack by oil or acids.
