Abstract

Linear polyesters are made by condensing a p : p1-sulphonyl dibenzoic ester of formula: <FORM:0777218/IV(a)/1> where R1 and R4 are o -hydroxyalkyl radicals containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms or alkyl radients containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms with excess of a polymethylene glycol (or ester thereof) of formula: R5O-(CH2)p-OR6 where p is 5-12 and R5 and R6 are hydrogen atoms or acyl radicals containing 2-4 carbon atoms. The reaction mixture may also include a polymethylene glycol containing 2-4 carbon atoms or a small proportion of an isomer or homologue of the p : p1-sulphonyl dibenzoic ester. The first part of the condensation is effected in an inert atmosphere, generally at 150-220 DEG C., whilst the latter part is effected at 225-310 DEG C. under vacuum (generally less than 5 mm. of Hg. pressure). Condensation catalysts, solvents in which the condensation reaction may be effected, solvents for the polyester and uses of the polyester are the same as those disclosed in Specification 777,220. In examples a diester of p : p1-sulphonyl dibenzoic acid is condensed with penta-, hexa-, octa-, deca- or dodeca-methylene glycol, or a mixture of hexamethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. Specifications 777,21 and 777,216 also are referred to.
