Abstract
<PICT:0776422/III/1> An oil separator craft having a normally submerged tank portion 48 for the reception of oil and water to be separated with normally open openings 21 in its bottom, has an inclined baffle plate 44 in the tank below and adjacent the deck 29, a screen 46 above and in contact with the baffle plate, and a second inclined baffle plate 43, both plates 44 and 43 having thereon a multiplicity of upstanding short rods 45 which aid in the separation of emulsified oil and water. The mixture is supplied by a hose 47 to the baffle plate 44 from whence it flows via screen 46 and baffle plate 43 into the main well 48A of the tank 48, the floating oil being removed through the bell mouth 76 of a pipe 75 connected to a pump and the water flowing out through openings 21. The vertical position of the bell mouth is adjusted by a control rod 78. A helical coil 49 feeds steam to a number of parallel pipes 50 to heat the mixture, and the viscosity and specific gravity of the fuel oil being separated are reduced by adding to said oil a proportion of diesel oil via a supply pipe 53 leading to a tube 55 perforated by holes 56. When the depth of sludge or oil on the bottom 11 of well 48A reaches that of collars 22 surrounding the openings 21 the latter are closed by manually lowering covers 23 (see Group XXXIII) and the mixture passes via apertures 68 and 69 in a double walled partition 61 into a scavenging compartment 60 from which the water flows out of normally open openings 70 and the floating oil is extracted at 74 by a pump 73 and delivered to the baffle plate 44.
