967,010. Cleaning tanks. INTERNATIONAL GROOM CO. G.m.b.H. March 26, 1963 [March 27, 1962], No. 11689/62. Heading A4F. [Also in Division F2] In a method of cleaning oily deposits from the interior surfaces of a ship's or other storage tank, the surface of the tank 3 is washed with a cleansing liquid, e.g. by means of a sprayer nozzle system 25, and the mixture of cleansing liquid and removed oily deposits is passed by a pump 4 to a compensating tank 1 from which it is passed by a pump 13 to a seperator, e.g. comprising a heating unit 8 and a separating unit 9, the mixture of cleansing liquid and removed oily deposits being separated and/or permitted to stratify in the compensating tank 1 and/or in the separator 8, 9 into oil cleansing liquid and bottom sediments, the arrangement being such that despite any variations in the rate of flow into the compensating tank 1 the rate of flow into the separator may be kept substantially constant. In the apparatus illustrated separated oil is returned from the separator 8, 9 through a pipe 20 to the compensating tank 1, and sediments are withdrawn therefrom through valve controller lines 23, 24. The cleaning liquid is passed by a pump 26 from the separator 8, 9 to the sprayer 25. Gases may be released from the system through vent pipes 21, 22, 23. An alternative system is described in which are provided a filter (at the inlet to the compensating tank), a reservoir for the recovered oil, and a supply tank for introducing cleaning compounds into the nozzle supply line.
