Abstract
1497733 Gas cooling and scrubbing J L VELEGOL 19 May 1975 21321/75 Heading B1R An apparatus for scrubbing and cooling furnace gases comprises a closed tank containing a liquid 12, e.g. water or mercury, a gas inlet 22, a gas outlet 36, a chamber 24 formed by imperforate baffle 26, a perforate wall plate 42 and a heat exchanger 16 for cooling the liquid 12, wherein a pump 38 in outlet 36 draws gas from 22 down into 24, where it bubbles through plate 42 and is cooled and scrubbed, the separated solids being removed from outlets 50 and valved conduit 54 controlled by material sensing unit 58. A bubble disperser comprising a perforate plate 98 and contra-rotating perforate discs 106 and 108 driven by motor 86 is also provided. The liquid 12 is circulated in the tank by pump 80. Liquid make-up is controlled by valved inlet pipe 66, overflow pipe 68 and level sensor 70. Liquid 12 may be sprayed into the incoming gases from manifolds 160, 162. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the gases pass over the surface of the liquid and are also sprayed with the liquid from manifolds fed with recirculating liquid 12. Gases may be treated with the two embodiments operating in series.
