Abstract
466,985. Tanks. CANTACUZENE, S. G. May 23, 1936, No. 14643. [Class 69 (i)] [Also in Groups XVII, XXI, and XXXIII] A tank for storing a liquid lighter than water is ballasted or moored so that it is totally immersed under water, and is provided with a conduit leading from its top for the lighter liquid tc enter and leave, and with means for permitting water to enter or leave near its bottom. As shown in Fig. 1, the tank has ballast 2, water openings 5, and a flexible or rigid pipe 3 with a control cock 4. In a modification, the lower part is flattened, the water may enter through pipes 8, 8a, Fig. 2, and strainers 7 are provided; further, a deflector plate 10, Fig. 3, may prevent the entering water from mixing into an emulsion with the lighter liquid, and a float 12 may close apertures 13 to prevent the lighter liquid from passing out through the pipe 8. Also the end of the pipe 3 and its cock 4 may be submerged, and connected to a surface buoy. The tank may be ballasted by concrete disposed in a jacket, by sand or gravel 35, Fig. 11, covered with concrete 37, may be fastened by ties 39, Fig. 12, to a concrete block 38, or held down by sand or gravel 31, Fig. 9, co-operating with flanges 30 or with ties connecting two tanks, or covering theentire tank. Alternatively, it may be moored to iron pigs 24, Fig. 8, and buoys 26 may support a net 27 serving as a protection against bombing. Another method of mooring comprises the use of a rigid or flexible member 52, Fig. 15, on which sand, gravel, &c. are heaped. The flexible member may consist of chains, or of bars, plates, or grids hingedly connected. A means for stopping the feed of lighter liquid to the tank when full, comprises a valve 78, Fig. 23, which closes when a float 75 is reached by the-lighter liquid.
