Abstract
1380992 Removing oil from water surface WHESSOE Ltd 28 Dec 1972 [8 Feb 1972] 5920/72 Heading B1D Floating oil is removed from the surface of sea waiter in a ships ballast tank through a tube 1 whose upper inlet end is supported by float 2, and the dielectric constant of liquid flowing through the tube is monitored by a capacitative probe 9 which controls a discharge valve 13 to close the valve if the proportion of oil being passed through the tube falls. A delay unit 11 inhibits spurious valve closure due to short term variations. As shown probe 9 is arranged outside tank 4, but it could be located inside tube 1 close to its inlet end. Tube 1 is pivoted at 5. Valves 7 and 13 are opened manually to start the skimming.
