Abstract
864,209. Stern tubes. P. & O. RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. Dec. 4, 1959 [Jan. 23, 1959], No. 2638/59. Class 113. [Also in Group XXVI] To prevent contamination of dock water, oil leaking from a ship's stern-tube gland 19, when the ship is stationary, is collected in an oil trap comprising a chamber 21 closed above and open below and located above the gland and the adjacent projecting portion of the propeller shaft 10, suction means being provided to withdraw the collected oil from the upper part of the chamber for discharge when the ship is in open water. The chamber 21 is formed by two axially spaced plates 17 and 18 welded to the upper part of the rope-guard 14 the plate 17 being segmented with the midpoint of its lower edge close to the shaft and the plate 18 being part-annular and having its lower edge sealed to the gland box 16 by a strip 20 of resilient oil-resistant material. A discharge pipe 22 leads downwards from the top of the chamber 21 to an outlet orifice 23 in the rope-guard. When the ship is stationary, oil leaking through the gland 19 rises into and is trapped in the chamber 21. When the ship is under way, flow of water across the orifice 23 lowers the pressure in pipe 22 and collected oil in the chamber 21 is thereby discharged into the ambient water. If the rope-guard 14 is secured to the stern tube nut 13 in a watertight manner the plate 18 may be omitted.
