Abstract

1343350 Removing oil from water surfaces; ballasting floating structures M F OLSEN 18 Oct 1971 48400/71 Headings B7A and B7M [Also in Division B1] Oil is removed from a water surface by towing a plurality of collector floats 10 therethrough. Each float comprises a collector chamber 15 having a cover 22 and a plurality of openings 21 in its side wall for receiving oil/water from the water surface. A ballast tank 26 containing water holds the float at a suitable depth so that the openings 21 are partially below the water surface. The quantity of water in the ballest tank and hence the depth is regulated by an inlet limit valve 30 designed such that it will allow water to enter the ballast tank until the outlet of conduit 31 is a pre-arranged distance below the surface. The collecting chamber has an outlet 14 which leads via flexible hose 57 to a common outlet hose 58 for all the floats. The hose 58 discharges 71 into a settling tank 65 (Fig. 7) on a separate vessel. The settling tank has float operated outlets 91, 84 for oil and water.
