Abstract

1396397 Removal of oil pollution on water A ERNST 16 June 1972 [17 July 1971 30 Oct 1971 10 Nov 1971] 28377/72 Heading C1C [Also in Divisions B1 and E1] Oily liquid is removed from the surface of water by floating on the water a hollow body 2 having a water-contacting wall 1 of a porous material which is wettable by the liquid but not by the water, so that the liquid enters the body, the level of the liquid, inside the body being maintained below the level of the water outside the body, which may be ballasted. The material may be natural or artificial sponge, matted fibre, wire or foil, and may be made wettable by the oily liquid and water-repellent by a light coating of the oily liquid. When full, the body is removed from the water and emptied. A chain of hollow bodies may be towed on the water, Fig. 2 (not shown). In Figs. 3 to 7 (not shown), one or more porous tubes are connected to one or more collecting containers, which may be towed by a vessel having a pump for removing oily liquid from the container or containers.
