Abstract

776,273. Pistons. RUSTON & HORNSBY, Ltd. Feb. 14, 1955 [Feb. 23, 1954], No. 5236/54. Class 122 (1). A piston for internal combustion engines, particularly compression ignition engines, comprises a head 12 having an integral annular rib 18 depending from the crown 16 whereby the head is detachably secured, as by studs 19, to a body portion 11, the annular space outside the rib 18 being cooled by the circulation of liquid, for example lubricating oil, but the cavity within the rib not being so cooled. The body portion 11 is formed with internal gudgeon pin bosses 13 strengthened by webs 14 and the cavity within the rib 18 is closed by a splash guard 20.
