Abstract
775,772. Fastenings; cotters; locking-nuts. LEFEVRE, L. A. June 21, 1954 [Jan. 18, 1954], No. 18187/54. Classes 44, 89 (1) and 89 (2). [Also in Groups X, XXII, XXIII and XXIV] An article 4 is clamped to a shaft or rod 3 by a cotter 1 having a crescent-recess 2 complementary to the shaft-surface, against which latter it is tightened by a nut 6 at one or both ends. A pin passing through a hole Id in the cotter 1 retains the latter in the article 4 during at least the final boring-operation which simultaneously forms the cotter-recess 2 and the bore of the article 4. A sleeve having two axiallyspaced cotters 1 is used for coupling aligned shafts or rods, Fig. 6, not shown. Single articles 4 may be used as shaft-collars, Fig. 4, not shown. In Fig. 3 two separate articles 16a, 16b are secured together and to a shaft 3 by two cotters 18. An article such as 4 may be a bearing-housing, and a cotter 1 secures the outer race of an anti-friction bearing therein. In Fig. 9 three collars as above, secure the inner race of a bearing 40 on a shaft 3. The outer collars 43, 45 are first clamped on the shaft and then the inner collar 44 is unscrewed along a thread between the collars 44, 45 to apply the desired axial clamping-pressure on the bearing- race, after which the collar 44 is clamped to the shaft and the outer collar 45 unscrewed and removed. A single article 4 may have a number of bores receiving shafts or rods extending in any direction, each clamped by a separate cotter. In Fig. 8, not shown, four such rods, extending in two intersecting planes at rightangles, are clamped together by one such article to form part of a scaffold structure. In Fig. 11, a grinding-wheel 46 is secured on its shaft 3 by screwing a collar 47 along a screwthread on the shaft, and subsequently locking the collar by a pair of cotters 48 which carry a part of the screw-thread of the bore.
