768,974. Securing nuts to work; cotters. MELSOM, W. A., and BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. May 3, 1955, No. 12813/55. Classes 89 (1) and 89 (2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A nut 15 to be rotatably secured to a part 13 has an internal annular-groove 2<SP>1</SP> interrupted by a slot 3 of such length and form as to permit the tapered or conoidal free end portions 7 of a straight-limbed staple 16 to be driven into contact with that portion of the groove opposite the slot so that the limbs. of the staple are turned inwards and around the part 13. The locking ring thus formed prevents relative axial movement of the nut and part 13 in one direction, but the part 13 may have an external groove co-operating with that in the nut and to form a passage for the locking ring thereby preventing relative axial movement of the parts in either direction. The staple has a semicircular medial portion, and is made of mild steel, aluminium or brass. Specification 777,118 is referred to.
