Abstract
775,054. Hangars &c. GOODYEAR AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. May 20, 1955 [July 1, 1954], No. 14561/55. Class 20(1) An inflatable hangar for large aircraft comprises three sections A, B, C each consisting of a number of arch-shaped cells, the cells 5-9 of section A being provided with diaphragms 10 to form compartments of which the middle ones are inflated with helium and the side ones with air. The cells 13-18 of section B are filled entirely with air as are cells 19, 20, 22, 23 of section C; cells 21 and 24, which are provided with diaphragms 10, contain helium and air. Attachments 26 at the bottom of the cells are anchored in foundations 27, and guy lines 28, 29 are provided. Internal guy lines 32 are not normally used but are secured to the ground when there are high winds. To open the hangar,. the air in cells 19, 20, 22, 23 is evacuated, the gas in the cells 21, 24 lifting these cells and the evacuated cells to a height sufficient for the passage of an aircraft. A door 25 built into air cell 18 permits passage of vehicles. In a modification, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the cells are inflated entirely by air, one end of the hangar being raised as a door by evacuating the air from as many cells as is necessary. All cells and compartments are provided with separate inflation sleeves.
