Abstract
867,944. Aircraft take-off and landing places. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Nov. 5, 1959 [Nov. 21, 1958], No. 37513/58. Class 4. Airfield ground equipment for use by vertical take-off and landing aircraft obtaining lift from a downwardly directed propulsive jet, comprises open channels for receiving and controlling the direction of flow of the jet, to maintain at. a low level entrainment by the jet, of air beneath the aircraft: This minimizes induced circulation of air beneath the aircraft, which circulation can cause a downward suction force of as much as 20% of the gross vertical jet thrust. The channels may be formed by a series of parallel L-section members secured to a base, Fig. 1, (not shown), or, as in Fig. 2, by walls 20a, b, c, d, of greater height than walls 21a, b, c, d. The height of each channel should be at least one and a half times the radius of the jet, and the width of each channel not more than one and half times the radius of the jet. The walls 20a, b, c, d, each have a slot of height equal to 15% of the height of the walls. An open mesh load-bearing grid, Fig. 3, (not shown), is laid over the channels and supports the aircraft landing gear. The aircraft is disposed with its fore and aft axis transverse of the channels.
