Abstract

774,275. Centrifugal mixers. WILLEMS, P. March 11, 1953 [March 12, 1952; Feb. 26, 1953], No. 6666/53. Class 86 [Also in Group VI] In a mixing device comprising two co-axial parts surrounding a central space and wherein at least one part is rotated the free ends of tools formed on one of the parts act on the mixture as it moves axially towards the space. The mixer shown in Fig. 1 has a head which is immersed in the material to be mixed, the head comprising a fixed disc 7 havng teeth 8, and a disc 9 having teeth 4 driven by a variable speed motor 1. The material to be mixed is drawn axially into the central space surrounded by the teeth, and is expelled radially from the space to pass between the teeth. In modifications the teeth have knife like axial and radial extensions which break up large particles before they reach the space surrounded by the teeth. In the construction shown in Fig. 7, rows 8, 8a of teeth depending from a fixed ring 14 co-operate with rows 4, 4a of teeth which are rotated by the shaft 5. The teeth 4 carry knives 10. The material flows from above and below to the space surrounded by the teeth. Fig. 9 shows a construction suitable for mixing material within a test-tube, the mixer comprising a rotary disc 30 having teeth 31 and resting within a stationary perforated cylinder 32. In a modification the cylinder may be made from wire gauze. An electrically heated sterilizing sleeve may be slid over the cylinder 32. The relative rotational speeds of the holders may be such as to set up ultra-sonic pressure waves in the mixture. Specification 734,751 [Group V] is referred to.
