Class 64(3) In a heat exchanger comprising fluidcarrying tubes 14 over which flows a heating gas, a perforate screen surrounds each or a number of tubes and forms therewith a chamber 22 in which is confined a mass of discrete material which is fluidized by the gas flowing over the tube thereby increasing the rate of heat transfer between the heating gas and the tube wall. Figs. 1 and 2 show an arrangement in which each screen 20 surrounds one tube only. Fig. 5 shows an alternative arrangement in which each screen 24 surrounds a plurality of the tubes 14.
