Hay is fed by a pick-up cylinder 27 on to a table 29, which extends laterally from an opening 21 in the side of the baling chamber 12 and is fed over the table into the chamber by pairs of tines 59, 60 carried by endless chains 54, 55. The tines of each pair are carried by coil springs anchored to a shaft 58, so that they may yield if an obstruction is encountered, and the shaft is mounted in end brackets 56, 57 pivoted to the chains and provided with rollers which engage under guide rails parallel to the lower rims of the chains to maintain the tines vertical as they move over the table 29. The guide ribs terminate adjacent the opening 21 to allow the tines to swing rearwardly to pass over hay fed into the chamber and through exit slots (not shown). The chains 54, 55 are driven through chain and sprocket and bevel gearing from the crankshaft 19 which drives the baling plunger 17, there being three pairs of tines and associated parts 76, 77 and 78 so arranged on the chains that they move over the table and through the chamber during retraction of the plunger and return along the upper runs of the chains during the compression stroke of the plunger. The tines 59 are shorter than the tines 60 to allow the hay to be fed to the rear of the table by the pick-up cylinder.
