Abstract
667,966. Pick-up balers. LUKE, A. A. J. April 28, 1949 [March 5, 1949], No. 11276/49. Class 94(i) A pick-up baler comprises in combination, a wheel-carried main frame A, a power source C, a pick-up elevator D, a transverse conveyer E having an inlet for receiving hay from the elevator, a packing chamber F having a wad board well 23, a reciprocating wad board 61 and a reciprocating packing plunger 24, said transverse conveyer comprising a bottom plate 49 and vertically arranged panels 46, 47, 48 forming a trough with an outlet into said wad board well 23, a pair of spaced rotatably mounted shafts 50, 51 arranged across such trough at a distance above said bottom plate, each having a pair of cranks, walker bars 52 rotatably mounted on said cranks to connect those on one shaft with those on the other shaft, each walker bar 52 having a number of depending fingers 54 adapted to be moved in circles by its cranks. The pick-up elevator D includes Figs. 1, 12, a pair of spaced discs 132 mounted on a transverse shaft 129 and carrying a number of loosely mounted transverse tubes 134 provided with rows of pick-up fingers 137. Levers 135 extending from the ends of the tubes 134 engage a fixed cam 133 to cause the fingers to engage and lift the hay from the ground and then deliver it, as the discs 132 move round, over stripper plates 138 and beneath wind-guards 141 to the transverse conveyer E. The elevator D may be raised or lowered as a whole by a lever connected by a link 155 to arms 128 in which the drive shaft 129 is journalled. The wad board 61, Fig. 3, actuated through link means by a connecting rod 26 which drives the packing plunger 24, presses hay, fed to the wad board well 23 by the conveyer E, down through the well into the path of the packing plunger 24 whence a bale is pushed into the packing chamber F, the sides of which includes hinged adjustable pressing bars 30. L-shaped needles 100 mounted on a vertical shaft 102 at one side of the packing chamber F are swung, by linkage mechanism, Fig. 1, operated by a crank 99, to carry twine or wire through slots 101 in the face of the packing plunger 24 across the bale to tying mechanism. The drive shaft 129 of the pick-up elevator D is connected to a shaft 82 driven by a chain 81, which chain is driven, either by a sprocket on an overrun clutch 79 on a baler wheel B, or by a sprocket 80 on a shaft 72 driven through a slip clutch 77 from the motor C, according as to which means tends to drive the chain 81 faster.
