[Also in Group XXX] In a hay baler of the travelling pickup type, the hay is delivered by the pick-up 10 onto the surface of a transverse feed table 13 and is then fed over the feed table and through a side opening 3 in the baling chamber 2 by pairs of fingers 20 carried by endless chains 21 which are driven continuously through chain and sprocket gearing and bevel gearing by the shaft 6 which operates the baling plunger 5 through a crank 7 and connecting rod 8. The plunger moves between the pairs of fingers on its operative and return strokes so that the,hay is consolidated against its side by the fingers moving over the table 13. Each finger is pivoted at 60 to an arm 49 which is pivoted to a transverse pin 48 carried by the chain links and is coupled to the arm by spring-loaded toggle links 61, 62 so that it may yield if an obstruction is encountered. The arms 49 and pins 48 carry rollers 50 and 54 respectively which run in tracks defined by U- shaped members 51, 52, 53, 55 and 56 secured to side plates 27, so that the fingers are constrained to occupy the positions shown in broken lines as they pass around the chain sprockets 23 and 24. The sprockets 24 are adjustable relative to the side plates 27 to vary the tension of the chains, and the rails 52 and 56 are interconnected for adjustment with the sprockets as a unit. The upper wall of the baling chamber is formed with slots 22 for the passage of the fingers 20 and the baler is fitted with the usual metering wheel 47 controlling the operation of the tying mechanism.
