Abstract

820,747. Baling-presses. SPERRY RAND. CORPORATION. Oct. 15, 1956 [March 29, 1956], No. 31294/56. Class 94(1). In a travelling pick-up baler in which hay is compressed by a plunger 13 reciprocating in a chamber 11, the hay is fed by a rotary pick-up device 20 and co-operating corrugated drum 26 on to a platform 25 which extends laterally from an opening 12 in a side wall of the chamber, and is moved over the platform into the chamber by fingers 40, 41 and 42 which depend from a reciprocable tubular bar 43 and are arranged to project through a slot 33<SP>1</SP> in the bottom wall 33 of a housing enclosing the bar and its operating mechanism. The bar is fitted at its rear end with a shaft 45 having rollers 46, 46<SP>1</SP> at its ends running in curved tracks 48, 48<SP>1</SP> secured to the side walls 34 and 35 of the housing, see Figs. 3 and 7, and encloses a piston 54 whose rod 53 is encircled by a compression spring 59 and pivoted at its end to one of the links of an endless chain 66 running around sprockets 69, 70. The chain is driven continuously in synchronism with the plunger 13 so that on its forward stroke the bar 43 is first inclined downwardly to cause the fingers 40-42 to move downwardly and forwardly into engagement with the hay, then horizontally to cause the fingers to sweep the hay over the platform into the chamber 11 in front of the advancing plunger, and finally upwardly so that the fingers 40, 41 are withdrawn through the slot 33<SP>1</SP> and a slot 11<SP>1</SP> in the top of the chamber 11 and make a return stroke above the wall 33. The fingers 42 project through the slot 33<SP>1</SP> on their return stroke, but are pivoted on the shaft 45 and swingable anticlockwise against the action of a spring 52 so that they ride over the hay. Variations in the quantity, condition or density of the hay fed on to the platform 25 are compensated for by the spring 59 which yields if a predetermined resistance to movement of the fingers is exceeded.
