Fodder crops are gathered into heaps by a machine comprising a frame movable over the ground by a tractor and on which are supported a system of movable rakes to lift the crop on a predetermined slope and an endless band moving downwardly and receiving the crop from the rakes to turn the crop back towards the ground whereby a heap is gathered between the rakes and the band, lifting means on the tractor being actuated to raise the frame clear of the heap when the latter is of desired size. As shown, Fig. 3, rake arms 11 are carried by cross bars 10 extending between endless chains 9 driven from the ground wheels 3 and raise the crop up a surface formed by a series of strips 21 located between the rake arms towards an endless belt 19 also driven by the wheels 3 and carried by a framework 17 pivoted at 15 to the machine frame for adjustment of its lower roller 18 towards and away from the chains 9. In a preferred form, Fig. 4, the wheels 23 at the rear of the machine are mounted on cranks 28 each angularly adjustable by inserting a pin through desired ones of sets of holes 45 in a fixed sector 44 and a sector 43 secured to the crank, so that the height of the rakes over the ground can be adjusted. The drive from the wheels 23 is by a belt 30 whose tension is maintained constant by mounting its upper pulley 32 on a crank 34 connected to extension 41 of crank 28 by a rod formed of two telescoping parts 38, 39 urged apart by a spring 42. Pulley 32 drives chains 25 carrying rake arms 24 through spur gears 36, the upper sprockets 26 of chains 25 being mounted on the axis of crank 34.
