773,340. Packaging plastic material. JOHNSON & CO. (LONDON), Ltd., A. Dec. 28, 1955 [Dec. 24, 1954], No. 37365/54. Class 94(1). The outlet of a machine which produces margarine continuously is coupled by a flange 2 to a conduit 1 through which the margarine is fed to an intermittently-operated packaging machine having its inlet coupled to a flange 3. A tube 4 is secured in a lateral aperture in the conduit and forms a cylinder for a piston 8 having a skirt 9 formed with a flange 10 and covered with a sleeve 11 of synthetic plastic. A sleeve 5, formed with apertures 24, is secured to the tube 4 and bolted to a closure plate 7 which supports a hollow rod 12 formed with a head 16 provided with a washer 19 engaging the interior of the skirt 9. Compressed air is admitted through the rod 12 to the interior of the piston so that when the inlet of the packaging machine is open the latter occupies the position shown with the flange 10 abutting the end of the tube 4. When the inlet of the packaging machine is closed, the pressure of the margarine forces back the piston against the air pressure so that the tube 4 forms a chamber accommodating the temporary excess of material, the latter being expelled into the conduit when the inlet is reopened. If the pressure of the margarine exceeds a predetermined value, the outward movement of the piston is sufficient to uncover a discharge orifice 22 in the tube 4.
