Abstract
773,140. Filtering liquids. COLLIS ENTERPRISES, Inc. Nov. 4, 1955, No. 31567/55. Class 46. [Also in Group XXI] . In a fuel filter, a filter chamber consists of two parts 20, 22 having an horizontal plane of separation, one part 20 being fixed to a support and having spaced inlet and outlet passages 26, 36 ; the inlet passage 26 is vertical, open-ended and unobstructed and opens into the lower part 22 from which liquid rises through an annular filter element 44 into an annular recess 34 in the upper part 20 and leading to the outlet 36, the inlet passage 26 being closed at its upper end by a valve 70 having a long stem engaged by the base of the lower part 22 to open the valve against the pressure of a spring 92 when that part is secured to the upper part. A recess in the underside of the upper part 20 houses the filter element 44 which is secured by the rim of the lower part 22 when the part is clamped thereagainst by a bail 58, Fig. 2 (not shown), screw 64 and nut 66. The stem 72 of the valve 70 is of cruciform section throughout the passage 26 and screw-threaded at its lower part 76 to hold a chuck member 82 adapted to retain a fusible plug 84 which, by melting if the temperature becomes excessive, allows the spring 92 to close the valve 70 as a fire precaution (see Group XXI).
