[Class 46] A filter for liquids comprises a housing 10, Fig. 2, provided with an inlet 11 and an outlet 12 terminating in coaxial orifices adapted to be closed, respectively, by valves 23, 25 on a common stem 26, the insertion of a removable filter element into the housing lifting the valves against the resistance of springs. The element comprises a slotted tube 13 surrounded by spaced filter packs 14 of hollow-leaf form. The valve 25 is slidable on the stem 26, and on being pressed upwardly by the upper slotted end of the tube 13 compresses a spring 30, which acts to raise the valve stem 26 and the valve 23 fixed thereto. The tube 13 is closed at its lower end by a wall 18 pressed upwardly by means of a spring 19 and a disc 20 which is held in place by a hand-wheel 21. The wheel is screwed into a cap 22 which is screwed on to the housing 10. A spring- pressed by-pass valve is provided to allow unfiltered liquid to flow through the outlet 12 when the pressure of the liquid is excessive. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the by-pass valve 38 is on the same stem as the inlet valve 23<SP>1</SP> and outlet valve 25<SP>1</SP>, and normally covers openings 43 in a partition 10a<SP>1</SP>.
