Abstract

928,553. Filters. V. D. ROOSA. Nov. 6, 1961, No. 39693/61. Class 46. A filter assembly comprises a cylindrical filter cartridge 48, Fig. 1, contained in a housing 13 having perforated top and bottom plates 45 and 47 respectively, and two closure members sealingly clamped to opposite ends of the housing by a releasable screw-threaded fastening member 14 extending axially through the housing, one closure member being a base 20 having a downwardly extending central hub 22 with a first inlet passageway 26 communicating with a fuel tank 15 via an aperture 76, a second inlet passageway 24 communicating with the first passageway, an outlet passageway 30 to a fuel pump and threaded fasteners 72 engaging a mounting flange 74 for securing the base to the tank, the base having a rim 40 engaging a compressible gasket 42, outlet ports 28a, 28b and a filter seal grommet 52 loaded by a coil spring 54. The other closure member is an optionally transparent end cap 10 having a peripheral wall for sealingly engaging a packing ring 62. A spring loaded plunger 33, actuated by an operating lever 34, has a soft, rounded nose member 36 which forms a common valve for closing the passageways 26 and 24. The fastening member 14 and cap 10 are sealed by an 0-ring 70 and seal 71 and a drain passage 81 for water in the member 14 is closed by a threaded plug 80. An air vent screw communicates with the interior of a chamber 21 in the base through a passage 86. The lower end of passageway 26 is closed by a threaded stud 27. In an alternative embodiment the stud 27 and ports 28a, 28b are omitted and the fastening member has an axial passageway provided with a pair of outlet ports adjacent its lower end, the bottom plate of the filter housing being imperforate. In a modification, two identical filter cartridges are incorporated in series, Fig. 4, the bottom plates 114 of each being imperforate and an extension stud 140, which supports an apertured spring washer 148 and incorporates an O-ring seal 145, interconnecting a fastening member 117, as in the alternative embodiment, and the base. In a further modification incorporating two similar filter housings in series, the lower filter cartridge is of the radial flow wound cotton cord type in which cotton cord is trapped between an outer wall and a wire mesh inner wall, the top plate being imperforate and the bottom plate being notched to permit fluid passage. A coil spring, extending about the fastening member, forces a fluid seal into engagement with the bottom end plate of the lower filter cartridge. Specifications 837,886 and 858,492 are referred to.
