[Also in Group XXVIIII In an oil filter, a cylindrical block 1 with recessed sides 27, 27a, houses a rotary plug cock 22 formed near its ends with oppositely directed L-shaped passages 36, 37 and at its middle with an annular groove 38. The passage 36 registers with either of opposed passages 34 in the block each leading into a space between a cup-shaped cover 14 and a filter sleeve 11. Similar passages 35 co-operate with the passage 37. Intermediate transfer passages 8 connect the annular groove 38 through spring pressed valves 18 with the interiors of perforated tubes 6 within the sleeves 11 but extending through end plates 12 thereon to receive screwed nuts 13, 15 by which the sleeves 11 and covers 14 are secured in place. End caps 16 on the tubes 6 engage the stems of the valves 18 to open them when the caps are screwed down. Removal of a cap permits the corresponding valve to close and stop the flow of liquid in the associated filter unit. In the recess 27a are mounted an inlet nipple 28 and a main discharge nipple 30 communicating respectively with the passage 36 and groove 38 ; the passage 37 communicates with an auxiliary discharge nipple 32. In operation, with the plug 22 set by its handle 25a as shown, liquid to be filtered entering at 28 flows through the passages 36, 34 into the filter 5 between the cover 14 and sleeve 11, through the sleeve into the tube 6 and thence past the valve 18 into the transfer groove 38 in the plug 22. Here it divides, most flowing back into the liquid circulation system but part passing through the other filter 4 in reverse flow under control of a restricted orifice in the auxiliary discharge nipple 32. On reversal of the handle 25a, the filter 4 functions normally and the filter 5 is cleansed. If the liquid from the cleansing operation is to run to waste, the plug 22 is shortened, the passage 37 omitted and discharge from the reverse flow effected through a drain plug. In both forms the passage 36 may be made T-shaped to permit both filters to act simultaneously or alternatively as desired.
