Abstract
542,206. Forcing liquids by direct gas pressure. KIDDE & CO., Inc., W. Feb. 12, 1940, No. 2678. Convention date, Feb. 10, 1939. [Class 102 (ii)] [Also in Groups XVII and XXXIII] The fuel tank 1 of an aeroplane or other liquid storage tank is provided on its underside with a jettisoning opening closed normally by a valve 17 and a frangible disc 32, pressure fluid, e.g. from a CO 2 flask, being admitted to a chamber 31 between elements 17, 32 to break disc 32 at a weakened line 35 while the pressure fluid is admitted to the tank to eject positively the liquid fuel and open valve 17 against its spring 28. The pressure fluid is led from the source of supply first through a passage 7 and pressing on a piston 47 disengage springs 45 from a knob 44 and permit the piston to fall on to a frangible diaphragm 41 and disrupt it when pressure fluid passes via the aperture so formed and channels 50 into chamber 31 until the pressure therein breaks out the disc 32, whereupon piston 47 by reason of the removal of stud 36 falls to the limit of its path and simultaneously cuts off passage of pressure fluid past the broken disc 41 by contact of a seating 64 with a washer 63 and also connects a channel 53 to channel 54 permitting pressure fluid to flow through pipe 8 to a device (not shown) constructed as described in Specification 485,324. [Group XXXIII], which closes the vent of the tank 1 opens a valve permitting supply of pressure fluid to the tank to open valve 7. The valve is re-closed by spring 27. The device is re-set by replacing the broken parts 41, 32 by fresh parts.
