Relates to fastenings of the kind wherein a pivoted latch bar is adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with a jawed projection of a keeper plate by a manually operable trip bar which extends below and at right-angles to the bar. According to the invention, the pivoted latch bar is mounted so that it is also capable of longitudinal movement to enable its end which engages the jawed projection to move at least into the plane of a lug on the keeper plate, the lug being located on the opposite side of the latch bar to the jawed projection so that it prevents disengagement of the bar from the jaw by pivotal movement of the bar, and wherein a keyactuated lock is incorporated into the fastening whereby longitudinal movement of the latch bar is effected by actuation of the key. As shown, a latch bar 3 pivoted about a pin 8 normally engages a projection 6 on a keeper plate 4 but can be moved longitudinally by a knob 7 into a locked position beneath a lug 16, the latch bar being formed with pockets 13 and 14 in a recess 12, corresponding to the latching and locking positions of the bar. The latch bar is also movable to and from the locking position from either side by a key-operated locking mechanism in which a plate 23 is slidably mounted in a casing 1 and carries a stud 28 projecting inwardly of a recess 17 in the latch bar. In the locked position shown, clockwise rotation of the key disengages the pocket 14 from the pin 8, the key then engaging a pawl 19 pivoted to the latch bar to displace the latter rearwardly. Rotation of the key also disengages a tumbler 30 from a recess 31 in the plate 23 to allow the plate to be driven by the stud 28 and the tumbler to be engaged behind a nose 32 on the plate. Rotation of the key in the reverse direction moves the latch bar into locking position irrespective of whether the latch bar has been moved to unlocked position by the key or manually by the knob 7.
