Abstract
In the production of calcium carbide in a shaft furnace from lime or limestone and carbon, e.g. in the form of coke, the furnace is charged such that, in a horizontal plane immediately above the tuyere mouths of CaO concentration of the charge increases continuously from the walls to the centre of the furnace. The proportion of lime to carbon may increase slowly from the furnace wall to a point at some distance beyond the tuyere mouths and then increase rapidly up to the central region where the concentration of CaO may be 85 per cent. The differential concentration may be produced by means of a special charging installation whereby the charge may be supplied to the furnace along the wall, along the centre, or along an intermediate region as desired (Fig. 3. not shown), or by passing a mixture of coke and lime in which the particles of lime are at least twice as small as the coke particles through a centrally arranged vertical feed pipe (Fig. 4, not shown).
