Class 14(1) In a method of mixing and dissolving a gas or vapour in a liquid, the gas or vapour is supplied continuously to the surface of a cylindrical rotating mixing element 1 immersed in the liquid in a mixing chamber 2, so as to cause rotation of the liquid which is also caused to flow in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the element 1 at a speed which is low relatively too the rotational speed of the element, the gas or vapour forming, on the element 1, a layer in vortex movement and the liquid in an inner zone, adjacent the layer of gas, rotating at a' velocity which is substantially equal to the velocity of the gas layer and is substantially greater than the rotational velocity of the remainder of the liquid. The gas may be supplied to the surface of the element 1 from the outside thereof but it is preferably introduced into the interior of the element 1, the wall 4 of which is porous to enable the gas to emerge to the surface. The rotation of liquid in the outer zone may be braked by baffle plates 6, Fig. 2, which may be arranged helically to generate the axial flow of the liquid. The liquid may be introduced to the chamber 2 by pipe lines, or the chamber may be mounted in a larger container which holds the liquid to be treated, in which case the chamber 2 and rotating element 1 may be arranged on a vertical axis. Several rotating elements may be arranged in the one chamber.
