Abstract

877,652. Aerating liquids; yeast production. PATENTAUSWERTUNG VOGELBUSCH G.m.b.H. April 27, 1959 [April 29, 1958; Feb. 18, 1959], No. 14323/59. Classes 14 (1) and 14 (2). Relates to a process for aerating liquids in which use is made of " mammoth pump effect," this being the movement of liquid in a tubular body immersed in the liquid produced by gas bubbles introduced into the liquid in the lower part of the tubular body. This produces in the tubular body a liquid-gas mixture of specific gravity less than that of the ungasefied liquid surrounding the tubular body and consequently the movement of the lighter liquid in the tubular body and circulation of the liquid. According to the invention in the process, which may be used in the fermentation of yeast, gas is supplied to the liquid by means of a rotating distributing device and the liquid is caused to circulate by " mammoth pump effect," the distributing device comprising a channel open on one side which is rotated at such a high speed that firstly, the gas builds up in the liquid behind the channel a vacuole from which gas enters the liquid in the form of large and small bubbles and that secondly, the small bubbles take part in the circulation of the liquid which is brought about by " mammoth pump effect " caused by the large bubbles escaping from the surface of the liquid. Apparatus for carrying out the process may be as shown in Fig. 1 in which a central cylinder or tube b is provided in a vessel a. A hollow rotary shaft c is disposed in the tube b and is provided with a gas distributing device e in the form of two blades of semicircular cross-sections Gas is supplied to the device e from the hollow shaft c. Fixed radial blades g 1 , g 2 prevent the liquid in the tube b from being rotated except in the immediate vicinity of the device e. In a modification the device e, Fig. 8, extends through the central tube b into the annular space a/b and sweeps through this, the open channel portions being arranged in the outer annular space and the liquid therein is thus gasefied. Circulation therefore takes place in the opposite sense as shown and the retarding blades g 1 , g 2 are provided in the annular space.' In another modification a stationary gas supply pipe k, Fig. 9, is used instead of the drive shaft c and the tube which guides the circulatory flow is constructed as a cooler in the form of a cold water coil or duct b 1 which is connected to inflow and outflow ducts b 2 , b3. A detailed, comparative example discloses substantially increased efficiency of yeast production when using the above-described aerating process for supplying the oxygen required and removal of carbon dioxide formed.
