Abstract

772,459. Tapping casks; venting. FARRELL, F. C. and SHAW, M. W. Aug. 15, 1955 [Aug. 17,1954], No. 23843/54. Class 21. A means for tapping casks comprises a onepiece spigot 11 capable of piercing the bung shive S of a cask B, a stack pipe 25 for insertion through the spigot 11 into the cask, and gland means 26, 27 forming a liquid tight seal between the upper end of the spigot 11 and the stack pipe 25. The stack pipe is surrounded at its base by a filter 29 and is formed at a short distance from its bottom end with one or more holes 30. Fig. 3 shows air venting passages in the spigot 11 with air entering the cask in the direction of the arrows and lifting a ball valve 18. If the pressure in the cask builds up the ball 18 is forced down onto its seating to seal the cask.
