Abstract
1,234,540. Subaqueous structures; diving chambers. LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT CORP. 16 Sept., 1969 [19 Sept., 1968], No. 44993/69. Heading E1H. A wellhead cellar 25 can be entered by personnel from a diving-chamber 27 through an opening surrounded by an elastomeric annular seal 55 situated above flared skirt 41 and abutting a conic surface 47 on a probe 43 upon the cellar. A cable 35 and winch 37 draw the chamber down to the cellar. When the seal contacts the surface 47 the pressure of water filling a lower compartment 31 is equalized with that of air in a compartment 29 for the personnel by the latter opening a valve 67 communicating with a sump 69. The ambient water then presses the chamber downwards to bring annular surfaces 45, 53 into contact with each other and compress the element 55. Latches 89 secure the chamber to the cellar. The water in the compartment 31 can be removed by a pump 73. A valve 64 is opened to flood the compartment 31 before the chamber is raised.
