Abstract

An aqueous solution for applying a crystalline zinc phosphate coating to steel and zinc surfaces contains phosphoric acid, zinc, chlorate, and nickel and/or cobalt, the zinc being present from 0.2-0.4 per cent W/V., the ratio of free to total acid being 1:7.5-1:10.0, the ratio of phosphate to chlorate being 1.0.28-1:1.10, and the nickel and/or cobalt being present in not less than 1 equivalent of the metal per 100 equivalents of zinc. The temperature of employment is preferably 145 DEG -165 DEG F. Solutions containing zinc oxide, phosphoric acid, nickel carbonate and sodium chlorate are given by way of example, it being stated that the nickel carbonate may be replaced by nickel nitrate, cobalt nitrate or cobalt carbonate.
