Abstract

Polyacrylamide and copolymers of acrylamide with acrylonitrile are rendered insoluble in water by heating under exclusion of air, in the presence of non-oxidizing vapours or gases, or in the presence of a carboxylic anhydride at a temperature of 139 DEG C. or more. The anhydride may be acetic anhydride or a mixed anhydride of acetic acid and caproic acid, and when heating in the presence of an anhydride the polymer may be swollen with a solvent such as water, formic acid or acetic acid. Heating under exclusion of air may be effected in an inert liquid such as ethyl hexanol or water. The product may be subsequently treated with formaldehyde.
