Description
Processes for the polymerization of acrylamide in organic solvents are already known, so z. B. from the USA. Patents 2,661,309 and 2,718,497, according to which, however, only products with relatively low molecular weights can be obtained. It is also known that in the Polymerization of acrylic acid or acrylamide in aqueous solution by adding, for example, aliphatic Alcohols regulate the polymerization in the sense of reducing the molecular weights can be effected.
In contrast, it has now been found that a preparation of water-soluble solid polyacrylamides with high molecular weights by precipitation polymerization is possible if the polymerization of the acrylic acid amide or its copolymerization at a total monomer concentration of 10 to 25% in a reaction medium of acetone and up to a maximum of 10% water in The presence of cyclohexanone peroxide or cumene hydroperoxide and alkali metal bisulfite is carried out as the activator system. The polymerization according to the aforementioned process should be initiated at temperatures between 20 ° C. and the boiling point of the acetone-water mixture. Optionally, the reaction can be carried out under an atmosphere of inert gases, such as e.g. B. nitrogen, can be carried out. The level of the molecular weight or the k value used as a characteristic according to Fikentscher (Cellulosechemie, 13, [1932], 58) can also be influenced to a certain extent by maintaining low temperatures, small amounts of peroxide and high acrylamide concentrations and high water concentrations in the sense of an increase will. The coarseness of the products increases as the water concentration rises. With the smallest amount of water, the polymerized batches get a pulpy consistency.
It is also possible, in the above-mentioned processes, to use other monomers, in particular Amides, nitriles and esters «, ^ - unsaturated carboxylic acids, such as B. acrylonitrile, acrylic acid ester, methacrylic acid amide, methacrylic acid ester and others, up to polymerize an upper limit, the same for each monomer individually slightly different is, but in general should not exceed 5 to 10% of the total monomers.
The use of other lower aliphatic ketones, such as. B. methyl ethyl ketone as ketone components of the reaction medium also leads to products with high molecular weights, they however, brings certain processing difficulties with it.

B. unter Verwendung von Dioxan k-Werte der Größenordnung 40, unter Verwendung von Isopropanol k-Werte unterhalb 35.The polyacrylamides obtained by the process according to the invention are water-soluble products of high molecular weights, i.e. That is, they have k values (according to Fikentscher, op. cit.) of over 80 or, depending on how the reaction is carried out, of the order of magnitude of about 100. They also fall instantly in solid form and are therefore the previously known dilute aqueous polyacrylamide solutions economically superior. According to the known process for the production of solid polyacrylamides Products obtainable by polymerization in organic solvents, however, show very low k values corresponding to the molecular weights, e.g. B. using dioxane k values of the order of 40, using isopropanol k values below 35.
