Abstract

771,447. Laminated springs: road vehicle spring suspensions. TOLEDO WOODHEAD SPRINGS, Ltd. Feb. 23, 1955 [Feb. 24, 1954], No. 5446/54. Classes 108(2) and 108(3). A leaf spring suspension for the axle C of a motor vehicle, comprises a hydraulic or pneumatic device A connecting the longest leaf B to a point which has little or no movement relative to the axle c. The pressure exerted by the device A tends to maintain the spring in, or restore it to, its correct position. The device A is connected between a clip at one end of the spring and a U-shaped member E bolted to the spring at a point b<SP>1</SP>. As shown, the device a comprises a pair of pistons D, each inwardly urged to a central position by a respective coiled spring A. On upward deflection at the centre of the spring, tending to separate the two pistons D, liquid or air contained in the cylinder can only flow from one side of each piston to the other, through small passages d. On rebound, the pistons are returned to a central position by the springs a, and liquid flow also occurs through larger passages d<SP>1</SP> controlled by non-return valves d<SP>2</SP>. In a modified construction, there is only one piston d, the casing of the device A being connected to the member E. Specification 734,886 is referred to.
