Abstract

704,270. Spring suspensions; preventing lateral canting. BECK, O. July 26, 1951 [July 28, 1950], No. 17774/51. Class 108(2) A wheel suspension for road vehicles, comprising a rocker which is freely oscillatably pivoted to the framed structure of the vehicle and resiliently compressible means disposed at either side of and at substantially equal distance from the rocker pivot, at least one of the resilient means bearing upon a part associated with a wheel and being adapted to resiliently transfer on to the vehicle any substantially vertical displacement of the wheel in relation to the frame structure of the vehicle whilst the resilient means at the other side of the rocker pivot bear upon a different part of, or are associated with the vehicle and resiliently resist rotation of the rocker about its pivot, both the resilient means operating to jointly take up and to resiliently resist any mechanical force which causes a substantial vertical displacement of the wheel in relation to the vehicle frame structure. and to transfer it to a selected part of the vehicle, is characterized in that the rocker is pivoted centrally with respect to the vehicle to a part of the frame structure. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 coil springs 22 are disposed between each lower link 16 of a parallel link suspension and each end of a rocker 20 pivoted on a frame member 10: Compression of springs 22 is limited resiliently by rubbber buffers 24, 24<1> and 25, 25<1>. Shock absorbers 27 are connected between the link 16 and frame 10. In another arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the shock absorbers are connected between the rocker and the lower link, either internally of or externally of the coil springs 22. In a further arrangement, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), lower suspension links are pivoted to the frame on a common axis, the upper links are dispensedwith and a shock absorber is connected between the frame and each lower link or between the latter and the rocker, the shock absorbers being disposed internally of or externally of coil springs between the rocker and the links. In an.arrange-- ment comprising a through axle, Fig. 6 (not shown), the axle is suspended from a rocker mounted similarly to that shown, by coil springs. Shock absorbers extend between the frame and the through-axle,. or between the rocker and the axle.
